Why study art?

Ivonna Beches interviews art student Sara Al-Salem to find out whether an art degree really is as useless as some people say.

Often, any degree related to art, seems  not taken seriously or seen as an ‘easy option’ by people who don’t take the degree, and occasionally even some of the students who take it up. The above interview was conducted with Sara Al-Salem, a student of Painting and Printmaking at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Sara also spent six months abroad in the USA in Richmond, Virginia, where she took up modules she wouldn’t have had access to in Qatar. Sara’s experiences provide a different perspective to the art degree, and will also hopefully inspire and encourage budding artists to turn their talent into  a viable career.
