Can going abroad make you richer?

Nov 17, 2015

Can going abroad make you richer?Employers are willing to pay a premium for an international outlook, according to a new study.

Demand is growing for workers with international experience, such as working overseas or dealing with people in another country. People with such experience earn an average of 15% more than those without, according to research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) and L’Oreal UK and Ireland.

The report highlighted skills like:

  • international experiences build skills like:
  • the ability to speak a foreign language
  • awareness of global economic and political issues
  • increased tolerance and cultural sensitivity
  • the ability to adapt to new situations and solve problems

Although the research looked at the benefits of working internationally, studying abroad can be a great way to get a similar experience. This could include spending a ‘sandwich year’ studying or working or in another country, or even doing an entire course at a foreign university. Gap years can also be a good way to get a range of different experience.
