76% of secondary school pupils think that school only trains them to do exams, according to a new survey.

Around 80% said that schools should put more effort into preparing people for the world of work, with a third saying they hadn't been encouraged to do work experience while at school.

Whatever career you are interested in, it's important to understand the skills you'll need and get some experience in the workplace. And if you don't know what you want to do, getting work experience as early as possible can help you to explore your options.

If you have left school and you feel you are unprepared for work, you may be able to do a traineeship. This combines training in employability skills with a work experience placement.
