How hard is it to get a job after university?

Jun 10, 2015

How hard is it to get a job after university?A survey shows university students are increasingly worried about finding work – but graduate employment is up.

According to the survey, which was run for the student accommodation company Unite Students by NUS Market Research, 40% of students thought it would be 'challenging' to get a job while 8% thought it would be 'impossible'. In 2013, only 23% thought it would be challenging and 2% thought it would be impossible

However, fewer graduates are unemployed now than any time since 2007, according to official statistics. Overall, 87.5% of people with university degrees were employed in the first three months of this year. For people between 21 and 30, the unemployment rate was just 3.9%.

While graduates are more likely to have a job and earn more than non-graduates, it's not all good news: average earnings for graduates have gone down by almost £1,200 since 2010, suggesting that many end up in jobs which do not make full use of their degree.
