Why do an apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Services?

Why do an apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Services?Apprentice Paul Derrick shows that it’s never too late to start an apprenticeship.

pHe took a few years out after school to think about what to as a career before deciding to become an electrician.

When did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. I had GCSEs and A-levels, but I didn’t want to waste my time just doing something that I wasn’t going to stick with, so I waited a few years before trying for an apprenticeship.

How did you decide an apprenticeship was right for you?

It was important for me to learn a useful trade so that I’d always be able to work. Being an electrician seemed ideal. I enjoy manual labour, going out and meeting different people and doing different types of work, which is exactly what I do here.

How did you find out about apprenticeships?

I found out about apprenticeships through talking to people – friends mainly – who had been apprentices themselves. It seemed to be the best way of getting into and learning a trade ‘hands-on’, whilst also being given an academic qualification and skills training at the same time.

How did you find your employer?

I ended up working for JFES. The City of Bristol College, where I studied, set it up. John, the boss, and the work-based learning team at the college have a good working relationship. They understand one another’s needs and match people’s ambitions with the employers.

What has your apprenticeship done for you?

As well as learning the job, doing the apprenticeship has made me a better communicator. We have to do a lot of liaising with customers so that we get a good understanding of what’s going on and what they want.

What are your plans for the future?

I should complete my apprenticeship in electrotechnical services this summer, having finished my portfolio or site diary and a year’s full-time college course.

I have spoken with John and when I finish I plan to stay on with the company.
